GUWAHATI: Good news for Assam and the entire Northeast! The deck is clear to upgrade the four-lane Guwahati Bypass to a six-lane one with four flyovers and one vehicular underpass. The construction work will start either in February-end or early March this year.

At present, the journey in the Guwahati Bypass is troublesome due to frequent traffic congestions at several stretches. This project, when completed, is likely to ease traffic congestion in the Bypass.

The implementing agency of national highway projects, NHAI (National Highway Authority of India), has allotted the project work to Dhariwal Buildtech Ltd Company of Haryana through bidding. The project will cost around Rs 300 crore.

The project covers the entire stretch of the Bypass from the Jalukbari Point to Basista Chariali with a flyover each at Boragaon, Gorchuk, Lokhra and Basistha Chariali, besides a vehicular underpass at the Beharbari point.

Talking to The Sentinel, NHAI's Guwahati office Project Director Suresh Kumar said, "The project will be over in 29 months. The works of the project will start shortly."

The NHAI has communicated to Union Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari to start the project physically or virtually." The NHAI is an autonomous nodal agency of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
