GUWAHATI: “The delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies has become a reality in Assam and there is no alternative to it,” said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The President of India will give her assent to the final delimitation list within 2-3 days and after that, the implementation process will commence, he added.
Talking to media persons in Guwahati today, Chief Minister Sarma said, “After the Election Commission of India (ECI) published the final delimitation list, there is nothing that anyone can do. People will have to accept that the delimitation exercise has become a reality now. We are waiting for the President’s assent and after that, the administrative reorganization works will commence. This will take around 2 months.”
The Chief Minister said that blocks would be reorganized and the district jurisdiction would also change. “The government’s focus is to ensure that all administrative re-organization works take place smoothly,” he said.
Meanwhile, protests continue in some parts of the State against the final delimitation order published by the ECI on August 11. Disappointed with the dissolution of his constituency, the MLA of Amguri, Pradip Hazarika recently resigned from his party, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). The AGP is an alliance partner of the BJP-led government in the State.
According to the final delimitation list, the Morigaon Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) has been unreserved. Tribal organizations like the All Tiwa Students’ Union are protesting against this. On the other hand, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has claimed that the delimitation exercise intends to reduce the number of minority-dominated constituencies in the State from 29 to 22.
Earlier, the Chief Minister said, “The people of Assam will hold prominence in 102 constituencies after the delimitation exercise. Assam should not be taken over by unfamiliar persons. Political power should be retained in the hands of our people.”
In the final delimitation order, the ECI revised the existing nomenclature of 19 Assembly constituencies and one Parliamentary constituency. According to the final list, 19 Assembly constituencies and two Parliamentary constituencies have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) while nine Assembly constituencies and one Parliamentary constituency have been reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs).
