GUWAHATI: Reiterating that the constituency delimitation exercise is in the greater interest of the indigenous people of Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa said yet again, “The delimitation exercise will pave the way for Assamese people to have a decisive say in 92/93 seats instead of 75/76 seats. If we fall for Congress’ conspiracy theory, the people of Assam will be at a loss for a third consecutive time, after the NRC and the Assam Accord”.

Meanwhile, opposition parties and various organizations reacted sharply to the draft delimitation proposals ahead of the hearing by the Election Commission of India beginning July 19. The AIUDF even moved the Supreme Court of India against the draft delimitation proposals published by the Election Commission of India on June 20, 2023. Most of the objections are against the changes in the names of some of the existing LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies) and HPCs (House of People Constituencies). Even the State government submitted a memorandum to the ECI seeking changes in the names of a few constituencies in the draft proposals.

With the ECI having received over 500 memoranda, a party may not get more than three or four minutes to brief the Election Commission of India about their demands and objections.
