SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said on Tuesday that his government was carrying out developmental schemes in the inter-state border area with the West Karbi Anglong district of Assam under Thadlaskein and Laskein C&RD Blocks. Block Development Officers are implementing the schemes.
Sangma was replying to a call attention motion moved by Mowkaiaw MLA Nujorki Sungoh during the Budget Session of the Meghalaya Assembly.
The Chief Minister said that the issues on developmental works in the border areas were discussed and resolved in the Deputy Commissioners/ Superintendents of Police Border Coordination Committee meetings held from time to time with their Assam counterparts.
According to him, the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills district had a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, West Karbi Anglong district of Assam on August 6, 2021.
At the meeting, both sides agreed to maintain the status quo on already completed construction.
It was also decided that keeping in view of the border talks at the Chief Ministers' level, it is desirable to maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas.
On the law-and-order front, the district administrations decided that both sides would maintain close coordination for peace and tranquillity in and around the border areas and that any developmental works would be informed beforehand by both counterparts.
The Chief Minister said the Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner objected to various developmental activities taken up by the Assam Government in the disputed areas.
The government also said that to instill confidence in the minds of the villagers living along the inter-State border with Assam, Meghalaya police have intensified mobile and foot patrolling, especially in the areas of dispute.
Also, magistrates and police are promptly taking action on all incidents having a bearing on law and order in the areas.
"The District Police of West Jaintia Hills have been closely monitoring the developments in the border areas and are in constant touch with their counterparts in Assam," Sangma said.
