GUWAHATI: The State DGP had a meeting with the eight SPs of the Upper Assam districts on law and order and alerted them today. Officials of the Assam Rifles, CRPF, and Army were also present at the meeting.

According to DGP GP Singh, he reviewed the law-and-order situation in eight Upper Assam districts: Golaghat, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and Charaideo.

For the past few days, the ULFA has been on an extortion spree from businessmen, tea managements etc. Apart from this, the outfit generally strikes in the run-up to Independence Day and Republic Day.

According to the DGP, he has asked the SPs of the Upper to remain vigilant in the run-up to Independence Day with intensified operations against antisocial elements and providing adequate security to soft targets like oil pipelines and other installations.

In the past few days, some ULFA linkmen sustained bullet injuries while on extortion drives. In this regard, the DGP alleged that the outfit is trying its bid for extortion with the help of a section of surrendered ULFA and overground members of the organization. However, the police are ready to foil every extortion attempt, the DGP said.

Concerning the bullet injury to an ULFA linkman, ULFA chief Paresh Baruah warned the DGP, asking him to stay away from victimising ‘innocent’ youth of the state. The DGP made his stand crystal clear: the police would spare no one in maintaining law and order in the state.
