GUWAHATI: Union Minister for Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju said today that the Union Budget allocated projects worth Rs 7,000 crore for e-Court projects, and he hoped that the e-Court projects would make the Indian judiciary fully digital and paperless.
Speaking at the Platinum Jubilee function of the Gauhati Court that completed 75 years of its glorious presence, Rijiju said that the challenge before the Gauhati High Court is huge because of the varied customary laws, traditional practises, and diversities in the Northeastern region. He said that the Gauhati Court has all along struck a balance amidst the diversities. He said that the Government of India is committed to ensuring the rule of law in the country.
Earlier, Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta of the High Court said that the Gauhati High Court has been playing a significant role in imparting justice in four states that have a distinctly diverse population.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The Platinum Jubilee Celebration of the Gauhati High Court is a historic occasion in the judicial history of the Northeast. On this glorious occasion, I recall with veneration all the proponents whose dedicated approach led to the establishment of this great institution of law. The unique and unparalleled tradition of this institution was set and nurtured by many eminent judges and legal experts.”
He said that the Gauhati High Court is deeply connected with the history of Assam and the Northeast. “Over the years, it has wielded significant influence on the socio-political advancement of the whole region. The apex court has maintained the highest judicial standard since its inception and continues to set new benchmarks in justice dispensation,” he said.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma released the Assamese version of the book ‘Gauhati High Court: History and Heritage’ at the function. Union Minister Rijiju also released a commemorative stamp of the Gauhati Court at the function. On the other hand, the Chief Justice of the High Court released ‘ATMAN’, a magazine, the Platinum Jubilee edition of the High Court.
The Gauhati High Court was promulgated by the Governor General of India on March 1, 1948, after the Government of India Act 1935 was passed, establishing the high court with effect from April 5, 1948, for the then-province of Assam. It was originally known as the High Court of Assam and Nagaland, but was renamed as the Gauhati High Court in 1971 by the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971.
On April 7, President Droupadi Murmu and Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will grace the occasion.
