GUWAHATI: The State government is contemplating bringing the people of Assam living on Indian land beyond the fencing of the Indo-Bangladesh border at some of the stretches. A team of officials from the Border Protection and Development Department of the state visited Indo-Bangladesh in the Barak Valley and the Dhubri sectors recently.

According to sources, the team visited the border villages following instructions from the State Government. They took the help of the BSF in their visit to the Indian villages outside the fence. They interacted with the fringe dwellers during their visit and asked them if they wanted to live on this side of the border if the Government of Assam relocated them. The villagers are divided on their opinions.

The visiting team of officials could sense that the people of Assam on the other side of the fence do face some sort of problem as the BSF has imposed some restrictions for them to follow.

Border Protection Minister Atul Bora reviewed the findings of the official team last evening. The team will report their findings to the government shortly so that it can do the needful.

The team also visited some of the border outposts (BOPs) of the BSF.
