GUWAHATI: After the publication of the final order for delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in Assam on August 11, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has frozen the electoral roll of Assam.

A meeting of senior officials of the ECI and Election Department, Assam was held in New Delhi recently. After the meeting, the ECI froze the electoral roll of Assam. This was done because continuous updation of the electoral roll was going on in the State. After the final delimitation order was published and the President of India gave her assent to the final delimitation list, the boundaries of all Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) and parliamentary constituencies have changed while the nomenclatures of some constituencies have also been changed. Under such circumstances, if continuous updation of the electoral roll goes on in the State, there is likely to be confusion. Hence, the ECI decided to freeze the electoral roll of the State.

The latest photo electoral roll of Assam was published on January 27, 2023. According to this photo electoral roll, there are 2,41,11,743 voters in the State. The number of male voters is 1,21,28,543 while the number of female voters is 1,19,82,804 and the number of third-gender voters is 398.

Now that the final delimitation order has been published, areas under the constituencies will be revised. As per the guidelines of the ECI, the revision of electoral roll will commence in the first half of September with technological support. This revision will be part of the Special Summary Revision 2024.

The ECI had notified the entire schedule for publication of integrated draft electoral roll, filing of claims and objections, and the publication of the final photo electoral roll for all states. But since the revision of electoral roll as per the final delimitation list will be a huge exercise, the ECI is considering notifying a new schedule for Assam. According to the proposed revised schedule, the integrated draft electoral roll will be published on December 1, 2023. People can file claims and objections from December 1 to December 30. The claims and objections will be disposed of by January 15, 2024, and the final photo electoral roll will be published on January 31, 2024.
