Election Commission of India team to oversee roll revision in Assam

The entire process will be part of the special summary revision (SSR) of the photo electoral roll in the state.

GUWAHATI: A team from the Election Commission of India (ECI) is going to pay a two-day visit to Assam beginning tomorrow to oversee the preparations for the 2024 electoral roll in the state. The visit is crucial as the state is preparing its first electoral roll after the delimitation of its constituencies.

Another team from the Election Commission of India is also bound for Assam on November 20 to oversee the overall preparations for the 2024 parliamentary elections in the northeastern states and West Bengal.

According to sources in the State Election Department, the department is taking special care in preparing the electoral roll, as this will be the first such document after the constituency delimitation exercise in the state. And gauging the importance of the matter, a team from the Election Commission of India is arriving in the state tomorrow to review the preparations and guide officials engaged in electoral roll revision in the state, if necessary.

The Election Department has invited all district commissioners and election officers of the districts to the meetings with the team from the ECI. According to the ECI's approved schedule, the department will publish the draft photo electoral roll on December 1, 2023. The department will receive claims and objections over the draft photo electoral rolls from December 1, 2023, onward. The department will publish the final photo electoral roll on January 31, 2024. The entire process will be part of the special summary revision (SSR) of the photo electoral roll in the state.

Meanwhile, with the Lok Sabha poll nearing, various teams from the ECI have started field visits to various states to oversee the overall preparations. As part of this, another team from the ECI will arrive in the state on November 20 to discuss all issues related to the preparations for the Lok Sabha election in the Northeastern states and West Bengal. All chief electoral officers (CEOs) and their subordinate officers from the northeastern states and West Bengal will remain present at the review meetings of the ECI team.
