DIGBOI: Security personnel resorted to lathi-charge on protestors resisting an eviction drive on NF Railway land in the Bogapani area under Digboi Police Station in the Tinsukia district on Wednesday.

Some police and CRPF personnel on duty and some encroachers sustained injuries in the lathi-charge. The security personnel resorted to lathi-charge when the miscreants started pelting stones at them.

The settlers in the Bogapani area, who had been living on NF Railway’s land for several decades, were constantly urged to vacate the railway land. Earlier, several violent incidents took place during eviction drives to free the land from encroachers. According to sources, on February 13, NF Railway served notices to the occupants of the area along NH-38 near Elephant Corridor to let them make alternative arrangements within three days.

However, the encroachers took to the street terming the eviction drive as inhuman. They alleged that NF Railway served them the notice just three days ahead of the eviction drive. They said that it was not possible for them to explore other means in three days. They claimed to have secured a stay order from the court to that effect until March, but NF Railway did not heed the order.

“The police are duty-bound to ensure that there is no breach of law, and nobody is allowed to create the situation of lawlessness in society,” said Dibyajyoti Dutta, the OC of Digboi police station said. According to him, police personnel have to disperse the mob to maintain law and order and ensure peace.

The drive demolished several houses erected illegally on land belonging to the railway department.
