GUWAHATI: Immigrants obtaining Indian Aadhaar cards – especially in the districts bordering Bangladesh in Assam, West Bengal, Meghalaya and Tripura – have worried the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to official sources, the MHA will carry out a drive in Hailakandi, Karimganj, South Salmara, Dhubri and Goalpara districts of Assam against syndicates issuing fake Aadhaar cards. The MHA has sought cooperation and suggestions from the states concerned. The Union Home Secretary had a joint meeting with the home secretaries of the states concerned on this issue.

Meanwhile, the police busted a racket issuing fake Aadhaar cards in the Morigaon district yesterday. The development has come to light when the MHA is active against fake Aadhaar card rackets. The police raided the house of one Sirajul Islam at Bualguri in the Lahorighat area in the Morigaon district yesterday. The police seized 500 blank Aadhaar cards, fake stamp pads, 121 SIM cards and other incriminating documents from the house. Sirajul is absconding. The police believe that Sirajul was issuing Aadhaar cards sitting at home.

According to sources, illegal Bangladeshis showing Indian Aadhaar cards is a common phenomenon. Brokers having links with Bangladeshis in some districts issue fake Aadhaar cards as and when they enter India. Aadhaar cards pave the way for illegal Bangladeshis to get SIM cards, ration cards, PAN Cards and other documents.
