GUWAHATI: State DGP GP Singh said that the family members of an earner hold the key to eliminating corruption by making it clear that ill-gotten money should not come to the family.

Speaking on the occasion of National Unity Day (Rastriya Ekta Diwas) before the media today, the DGP spelt out the initiatives taken for Assam police personnel, including soft skill training, rewards for good performance, and punishment for misdeeds and errant behaviour.

The DGP said that 455 personnel received awards, including the Chief Minister’s medal for outstanding service to 37 personnel, the DG’s commendation, and other awards for those showing good performance.

On the other hand, the DGP said as many as 254 personnel were taken off the force through VRS and CRS, with around 48 personnel dismissed for service.

GP Singh also promised stiff punishment for errant police personnel, highlighting a ‘zero-tolerance policy’ for drinking on duty and moral turpitude, including bad and errant behaviour. “We will reward those displaying good behaviour and good performance while giving punishment to those with bad and errant behaviour. In terms of human resource development, we are providing soft skills training to the personnel. All three steps are being done in a parallel manner,” he stated.

It should be mentioned here that the National Unity Day (Rastriya Ekta Diwas) was observed by Assam Police by organising the ‘Rastriya Ekta Diwas Parade’ on Tuesday morning, where the troops of the CRPF, Assam Police, NCC, and Assam Police Band platoon participated.

The parade was flagged off by DGP Assam G.P. Singh at the Latasil playground. The unity parade, starting from Latasil, took the FC Road and Tayabullah Road and proceeded via District Library Point, through district sessions court, Cotton University Point, and then via Chief Justice Residence Point, again back to Latasil. The national unity pledge was also administered to all the participants in the gathering.

The DGP paid rich tributes to the first home minister and deputy PM of independent India, Sardar Vallab Bhai Patel, whose birthday is celebrated as National Unity Day on October 31 every year.
