GUWAHATI: The flood situation in the State is improving but people are now grappling with post-flood problems. The floods have caused structural damage to their houses and properties. Moreover, although the water outside people’s houses has receded, many houses remain water-logged. The floodwaters have left behind a large amount of silt and other debris and it will take time for people to clear up all the debris in front of their houses.
Meanwhile, the death toll due to floods rose to five with two persons drowning to death in Barpeta today. The number of affected districts and subdivisions has come down to 11. These are Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari and Tamalpur. The number of flood-hit villages has also reduced to 563. A total of 1.55 lakh people in these villages continue to remain affected. There are around 2,950 inmates in 99 relief camps and centres across the State.
Infrastructural damage continues. In Mangaldai, the Koinachuba embankment bridge has been damaged. In Nalbari, the Katahkuchi embankment has been breached. At Jalah, an irrigation canal has been damaged while in Baksa, an agricultural bundh has been damaged. In Chenga, the Paschim Chatala LP School has suffered structural damages.
