Flood situation in Assam improves yet grim

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in the state has improved slightly, but the situation is still grim as the Brahmaputra is flowing above its danger level at some stretches. The deluge claimed a human life in Bokakhat Revenue Circle in the Golaghat district today, raising the cumulative toll due to floods this year to 16.

According to CWC's evening report, the Brahmaputra is flowing above its danger levels at as many as five different stretches in the state: Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara, and Dhubri. The mighty river maintains a falling trend from Dibrugarh to Tezpur, a steady trend from Guwahati to Goalpara, and a rising trend in Dhubri. The Dikhou is maintaining a rising trend in the Sivasagar district.

According to an ASDMA report, the floods affected 44 revenue circles in 19 districts today. The districts are Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, and Sonitpur. The report further said that as many as 4,03,313 people in 884 villages are reeling under floods in the state today. The worst affected district in terms of population is Darrang, with 72,852. Following Darrang is Nalbari district with 72,427 people affected and Majuli with 61,238 people affected. As of this date, nine relief camps are operational in the state, giving shelter to 3,031 inmates.

Reports of crop and infrastructure damage, as well as affected livestock, keep coming from various areas of the state.

Meanwhile, the RMC (Regional Meteorological Centre), Guwahati, has predicted light to moderate rainfall at a few places and heavy rainfall accompanied by lighting from place to place in the state in the next 24 hours.
