Flood Situation Is Still Grim: Dima Hasao is cut-off by road, rail & internet

GUWAHATI/HAFLONG: Under the twin attack of floods and landslides, the Dima Hasao district is siffering the worst. The New Haflong Railway Station looks desolate and muddy. The hill district remained cut off by roads, rails and internet. Power connections also remained cut in many areas in the district.

According to ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) sources, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Nimatighat in the Jorhat district. The Kopili River is still flowing above the danger level at Kamrpur. The river has been in full spate for the past few days. In Gohpur, the Chatrang River is in full to the bream. The other rivers in full spate are the Nuna in Kalaigaon and the Mora Pagladia in Tihu. Tamulpur is also under flood fury. Two people died in Cachar due to floods.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sent Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan to the Dima Hasao district to take stock of the situation. ASDMA sources further said that twenty districts were facing flood fury in the state. The districts include Cachar, Dhemaji, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Nalbari and Kamrup (M).

The floods affected 1,97,248 people in the state. Around 32,959 people are taking shelter in 55 relief camps in the state. The authorities evacuated 15 flood-affected people from various parts of the state during the day. SDRF, NDRF and Fire & Emergency Service personnel are rescuing the affected people.

Scarcity of food and medicines is staring at the people of Dima Hasao with the district remaining cut off by rail, road and internet. The hill district received the worst-ever blow under the twin attack of floods and landslides due to heavy rains in the past five days.

Landsides lead to the lost property, farming land, standing crops, livestock and three precious lives, including a minor girl.

The places like Lower Haflong, Jatinga, Mahur, Harangajao, Dittokchera, Maibang etc., have been literary cut-off from the rest of the country. All rivers like Jatinga, Diyung, Kopili and Mahur, and their tributaries are flowing above danger levels.

NF Railway is working on war footing to ensure connectivity in the region. Around 1,600 passengers stranded at Ditokcherra station had been rescued and sent to Badarpur and Silchar. NF Railway has also arranged to refund the ticket fares amounting to Rs 8 lakh to 1,006 affected passengers. NF Railway is putting efforts to restore the damaged lines and restarting the train services to south Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur. The number of breached rail lines has increased to 53.
