GUWAHATI: The health condition of former three-times Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi (86 years) worsened on Saturday afternoon. He was put under the mechanical ventilation from non-invasive ventilation.

Mechanical ventilation is a treatment to help a person breathe when he finds it difficult or is unable to breathe on his own. A mechanical ventilator pushes airflow into the patient's lungs to help the patient breathe.

Due to post-COVID complications, Gogoi was readmitted to the GMCH on the night of November 1. Gogoi had spent the previous two months in the GMCH after he tested COVID-19 positive in August. He tested positive on August 26. He was discharged from the hospital on October 25.

On Saturday evening, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma rushed to the GMCH and took stock of the condition of former CM Gogoi. Later, he told the media that though former Chief Minister Gogoi was breathing with the help of machine yet his vital organs were not working properly.

"His condition turned very critical on Saturday afternoon. Doctors are doing their best. High doses of medicines are being given to make his vital organs function properly. He cannot identify anybody now; and he is completely in an unconscious state," Sarma said. The Minister ruled out the possibility of taking Gogoi outside Assam for advanced treatment at this stage.
