New Delhi: Putting an end to his decades-old innings with Congress, Bhubaneswar Kalita on Friday formally joined to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goel and BJP general secretary Bhupendra Yadav. “I am a person with an ideology and today I have joined the BJP for their ideology,” said Kalita after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party at party headquarters in New Delhi. His joining with the BJP seems to be a major setback for the already shattered Congress.
Opposing Congress’ stand over Article 370, Bhubaneswar Kalita recently has resigned from Rajya Sabha and subsequently, he submitted his resignation from the primary membership of the party.
“I feel betrayed by the Congress because after I put my resignation as Rajya Sabha MP, nobody from Congress contacted me...on the contrary, many of the Congress leaders have been terming me a selfish,” said Kalita.
Bhubaneswar Kalita was associated with the Congress since 1984. He was once the minister in Assam government during the Congress regime. He represented the Congress from Assam on both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
It is to be noted that Kalita was due to retire in less than a year as his tenure was to complete on 9 April, 2020. After Sanjay Singh, Kalita was the second Congress MP to resign from the Rajya Sabha and quit the party to join BJP.
He had said, “My conscience does not allow me to be a part of such negative developments and still continue in the Congress party.”
