GUWAHATI: The Assam govt's Department of Women and Child Development directed the Director of Women and Child Development to take necessary action against the alleged embezzlement of crores of rupees of funds by the Social Welfare Department, Assam. The Department also asked the Director to take the matter seriously.
The directive from the Department came after the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office) sent a complaint lodged by ANNS (Amguri Naba Nirman Samitee) president Diganta Saikia on the alleged embezzlement of funds. Saikia alleged that from 2009-10 to 2017-18, the Social Welfare Department had embezzled crores of rupees meant for children. He also cited the report of the CAG on the financial anomalies in the Social Welfare Department.
Apart from lodging the complaint with the PMO, Saikia also sent a copy of the complaint to the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Speaking to The Sentinel, Saikia said, "Hearing the PIL filed on this allegation, the Gauhati High Court asked the State Government on May 19, 2022, to place the CAG report on the Social Welfare Department before the PAC (Public Accounts Committee) of the Assam Legislative Assembly to examine the alleged embezzlement of funds. We have to move the PMO as no report from the PAC or the government came, and we also sent a copy of the complaint to the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development."
