Gauhati HC designates courts to hear cases related to ethnic violence in Manipur

GUWAHATI: Pursuant to the order of the Supreme Court on August 25, 2023, passed in a Special Leave Petition (Civil) (19206/2023), the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court has designated the Special Judge, CBI and NIA, Assam, and the Courts of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro), Guwahati, as well as Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro), Guwahati, to ensure the hearing of the cases related to ethnic violence in Manipur.

According to the directives of the Gauhati HC, the cases will be heard in the special judge’s court of the NIA and CBI, as well as the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court, Kamrup (metro), and the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Kamrup (metro), in Guwahati. The Gauhati High Court will extend its full cooperation during the hearing of such cases.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of India remarked that the victims and witnesses would be able to give testimony electronically from their homes in Manipur rather than physically coming to the Assam Court.
