GUWAHATI: A division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice Arun Deb Choudhury issued notices to various departments and agencies of the State Government asking them to submit their respective affidavits within four weeks on the illegal appointments in the GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation).

The bench heard a PIL (51/2023) filed by Joydeb Das. The petitioner said, "In an order issued on February 10, 2021, as many as 500 contractual employees were regularized in the GMC as regular mazdoors with a pay scale of Rs 12,000 to Rs 37,500 with a grade pay of Rs 3,900."

The petitioner stated that this regularization was a violation of the provisions of the AFRBM (Assam Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act, 2005).

The petitioner also stated that GMC was required to fill up the posts through advertisements and interviews, but during the regularization of the 500 contractual mazdoors, the civic body did not advertise it, nor was it advertised at the time of their appointments on a contractual basis.

The petitioner said that he had filed an FIR at the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department of the Assam Police on March 17, 2023, and requested that they conduct an inquiry and register a case against the culprits.
