GUWAHATI: Chief Secretary Pabon Kumar Barthakur has asked all authorities concerned to get ready for floods. He has sought coordination from all stakeholders to mitigate the flood’s fury.

The Chief Secretary today reviewed the flood preparedness of all the departments concerned, besides the Army, BSNL, FCI, UNICEF, NEEPCO, and others. He said that the authorities need to ensure adequate food stocks, especially for newborns, children, pregnant women, and others. He appealed to UNICEF and the State Health Department to take steps in advance to face would-be health hazards during floods.

The meeting had a detailed discussion on measures to be taken by each of the government departments, central agencies, and others.

The Chief Secretary said, “If we work with more expertise in a farsighted way, we can minimize the damage due to floods to a large extent. We need to do all the work in a time-bound manner.”

ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority) CEO GD Tripathy gave a power-point presentation before the meeting as to how the departments concerned would face the flood fury.

The floods affected almost all districts in the state last year. The calamity claimed over 100 lives, besides affecting around 25 lakh people, crops, and livestock. Thousands of houses were also damaged.
