GUWAHATI: As per the decision of the state government, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) have made it mandatory for existing and new electricity consumers to link their respective GMC holding numbers with their power connections.

While the process was initiated some time back, the linking of GMC holding numbers and APSCL power connections has now become mandatory with the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC) amending Regulation 4.2 of the AERC (Electricity Supply Code) Regulation 2017, as AERC (Electricity Supply Code) Fifth Amendment, 2023.

The AERC amended this regulation after the state government issued a directive regarding furnishing of GMC holding numbers for obtaining electricity connections. The amended regulations states, "If the applicant is an individual living within the area of Guwahati Municipal Corporation, the applicant shall have to furnish his/her GMC holding number/ assessment number along with the application… All the existing consumers living within the area of GMC shall also upload the holding number/ assessment number".

However, the regulation also specifies that government offices, religious places, streetlights, agriculture/irrigation establishments, society connections of apartments, and temporary connections may be exempted from furnishing linking of holding number/ assessment number.

Meanwhile, addressing the media here on Friday, GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania said that the civic body has collected property tax of Rs 84 crore so far, out of a target of Rs 100 crore by January 31 next. He said that notices will be sent to those who have been defaulting on payment of property tax.

Sarania mentioned that the tendering process will start on Saturday for de-siltation of four of the five rivers/rivulets that flow through the city. The estimated cost of the de-siltation work is Rs 19.63 crore. De-siltation of the Lakhimijan rivulet will be done separately at a cost of Rs 1.94 crore, the Mayor said. On the other hand, de-siltation of various drains of the city will be carried out simultaneously at a cost of Rs 6.5 crore, he added.

Mentioning that there are more than 300 roads and bye-lanes in the city, the GMC Mayor said that tenders worth Rs 200 crore will be floated soon for the required repair and reconstructions work.

Referring to the forthcoming G20 events in Guwahati, Sarania said that work has started to beautify the city. Removal of banners, hoarding etc., has begun, he said. He added in this context that owners of under-construction buildings have been also asked to cover the facades of such buildings by using screens made of various materials.
