GUWAHATI: Incidences of gold seizures have increased in recent times. Assam Police sources said that gold smugglers are bringing in gold from Bangladesh to Guwahati via Meghalaya. From Guwahati, the gold is smuggled to different parts of the country. One such gold smuggling racket was busted by the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police on Friday.

According to STF personnel, they had received information about a gold consignment being brought to Guwahati from Meghalaya. An i20 car bearing registration number ML05U1216 stopped in the Lal Ganesh area in Guwahati. A bike came and halted near the car. Two parcels were allegedly exchanged between the bike rider and the person in the i20 car. Due to traffic problems, the STF team could not chase the bike but the team went in pursuit of the car. The car drove away towards Lokhra but the STF team managed to intercept it at Jyotikuchi.

The person in the i20 was apprehended. He was identified as Himangshu Paul. He is a resident of Shillong. The STF seized Rs 22.70 lakh cash from his possession. Paul was interrogated. Based on the information given by him, STF searched a rented house in the Bharalumukh area of the city. Here they arrested a man named Kishan Kanwar Kadey. He was the bike rider with whom Paul had exchanged parcels. Kadey was melting five pieces of gold with a gold melting machine when the STF arrested him. He is a resident of Rajasthan.

STF seized gold weighing 585 grams from his possession. The market value of the seized gold is Rs 34 lakh.
