GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students Union) said that the government should continue the services of 200 additional FT (Foreigners Tribunal) members in the interest of speedy disposal of pending cases.
The State Government, in consultation with the MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs), formed 200 additional FTs after the publication of the final NRC in 2019 to dispose of the appeals of the NRC (National Register of Citizens)-rejected people. Since the NRC authority has not issued NRC rejection letters to the 'ineligible NRC applicants' so far, the government had to attach the 200 additional FT members to the existing 100 FTs to dispose of the pending cases. The additional FT members have been disposing of the pending cases in the regular FTs since then.
Of late, the State Government has decided to discontinue the 200 additional FTs till the authorities concerned issue NRC rejection letters.
Talking to The Sentinel, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said, "The 100 regular FTs have around one lakh pending cases. It will take quite a long time for the regular 100 FTs to dispose of such a large number of cases. In the interest of speedy disposal of pending FT cases, the government should continue the services of the additional 200 FT members. The additional FT members have expedited the disposal of cases to an extent. The government should reconsider its decision to discontinue their services."
