GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that Assam receives a low quantum of GST compensation from the Centre because GST collection of the State has been on the high side since the beginning.
Speaking at a programme held at the BJP's new office at Basistha here to celebrate the 42nd Foundation Day of the ruling party, Sarma said that GST collection is good in the Northeastern States, with Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland receiving a surplus rating. Other States which have low GST collection receive higher compensation of between Rs 30,000 and Rs 35,000 crore from the Centre. He said the financial condition of Assam is good and GST collection is satisfactory. Therefore, Assam receives around Rs 1,000 crore per annum as GST compensation from the Centre.
Regarding the escalating prices of petrol and diesel, the Chief Minister said that petrol and diesel prices are decided by the Centre and any individual decision by the State Government will not provide adequate relief to the public. He, however, said that the State Government will stand by any decision taken by the Centre concerning fuel prices.
