GUWAHATI: Schools which secured B, C and D grades in Gunotsav conducted earlier this year, will have to conduct remedial classes and extracurricular activities for at least 10 days during the summer vacation.

In Guntosav conducted this year, 7,710 schools across the State secured B grade; 1,972 schools secured C grade; and 767 schools secured D grade. These schools numbering around 10,000 will have to conduct remedial classes during the summer vacation. But this has not gone down well with the teachers of these schools. There is also confusion regarding this order because while State Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu has said that taking remedial classes is not “mandatory” for teachers but “voluntary”, the orders issued by the Inspector of Schools of the districts say otherwise.

For example, the circular issued by the Inspector of Schools, Nagaon states that remedial classes for a minimum of 10 days (from July to July 10) must be conducted for students of schools that secured B, C and D grades in Gunotsav. All teachers have been directed to be present during the remedial classes.

On the other hand, minister Pegu tweeted that the Education Department has not issued any direction regarding compulsory remedial classes. However, the school management committees of the schools which fared poorly in the last Gunotsav are advised to conduct remedial classes and extracurricular activities during the summer vacation with the teachers who volunteer to do so.

Teachers are unhappy with this development. They said that they should not be made to take remedial classes during the summer vacation as they have their personal work too. On the other hand, sources in the Education Department said that this was a student-centric decision. The schools that have performed poorly in Gunotsav must take remedial measures to improve their academic performance. The remedial classes will be conducted only for 10 days and teachers can do their personal work during the remaining days of the summer vacation.

In the Gunotsav conducted earlier this year, some of the districts which performed poorly are Lakhimpur with 162 schools securing C grade and 88 schools securing D grade. In Kokrajhar, 124 schools secured C grade and 44 schools secured D grade. In the Cachar district, 117 schools secured C grade and 27 schools secured D grade. A total of 94 schools in the West Karbi Anglong district got C grade and 73 schools got D grade while 82 schools in the Sonitpur district got C grade and 30 schools got D grade.
