GUWAHATI: That the city is turning out to be a conduit route for various Burmese items including fake consignments to different parts of the country has once again been established. Acting on a tipoff, Guwahati Police detained 26 supari (dried betel nut)-laden trucks at Jalukbari and another at Jorabat on Wednesday night. Sources informed that most of these vehicles were from Mizoram and were proceeding towards West Bengal.

City Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said that verification of the papers of these vehicles are currently underway. “We’re carrying out the process with personnel of the Sales Tax and the District Transport Office (DTO). The Sales Tax department is checking the challans and the relevant GST aspects of the vehicles while the DTO will investigate about the loading part of the trucks. Action will be taken as per law if we find any lapses.”

It may be mentioned that often reports are received of many such illegal transportation of not only Burmese supari (dried betel nut) but also of other contraband items including cigarettes through the city. Sources further informed that these vehicles ply along the Mizoram-Silchar-Guwahati route to deliver their goods at other places across the country.
