GUWAHATI: Three successive recoveries of Royal Enfield motorcycles stolen from Delhi and sent to the Northeast with fabricated documents through the courier services via Guwahati Railway Station lend credence to the fact that the railway station of the city has long been used as a transit route by motorcycle lifters.

GRP (Government Railway Police) personnel, who conducted a raid in the parcel office at the Guwahati Railway station on Wednesday, recovered as many as 13 Royal Enfield motorcycles, all stolen from Delhi and sent to various destinations in the Northeast for sale.

This is not the only such recovery of stolen Royal Enfield motorcycles sent from Delhi. On September 25, RPF personnel had arrested two persons – Abung Khaba from Manipur and Bashishth Prasad from UP. Both were arrested along with two Royal Enfield motorcycles which they had taken from the parcel office at the railway station. The duo failed to show any valid documents of the motorcycles. The xerox copies of documents that they showed to the RPF proved to be fabricated ones. This apart, during interrogation Khaba admitted that the two motorcycles had been stolen from Delhi and were sent to them through courier for sale in Myanmar via Manipur. After the RPF handed the duo to the GRP, a case (165/19 u/s 379) was registered.

On September 28 also, the RPF personnel arrested three persons – Wahidur Rahman, Warish Khan and Mamtajur Rahman, all hailing from Thoubal district in Manipur – when they were taking the delivery of a Royal Enfield motorcycle sent from Delhi through courier from the parcel office at the railway station. During interrogation, it came to light that Warish Khan’s elder brother Suraj Khan who has been staying in Delhi lifts motorcycles from various places in the national capital and after fabricating the documents he sends the stolen motorcycles to his brother for selling the motorcycles. Following investigation, the owner of the motorcycle was traced to Delhi. The duo was handed over to the GRP that registered a case (167/19 u/s 379/471 IPC).

It was in the course of their investigation into these two cases that the GRP personnel conducted the raids on Wednesday. The raid has led to the recovery of 13 stolen Royal Enfield motorcycles.

However, transportation of stolen goods through the Guwahati Railway Station has not been a one-way traffic. Another incident detected by the GRP personnel on Wednesday proved this fact. The GRP personnel seized 67 mobile sets and arrested two persons – Abdus Sattar and Shahabuddin Sheikh, both hailing from Maldah in West Bengal – from Platform No 2. The duo told the GRP personnel that they had taken the mobile sets from Nagaon. They also revealed to the GRP that the mobile sets were for sale; but they failed to produce any valid documents against those mobile sets. They were about to board the Brahmaputra Mail.
