GUWAHATI: The HS final examinations 2023 under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) have the highest-ever number of candidates. The total number of students taking the examinations this year is 3,42,869 against 2,05,625 in 2022.

The apparent reason behind such a large number of students taking the examinations this year is that the SEBA (Board of Secondary Education, Assam) could not hold the HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) examinations in 2021 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19. The results of internal examinations which the SEBA took into account for the promotion of the candidates allowed 93.18 percent of the students pass the HSLC. That HSLC batch is taking the HS final examination this year. And the number of HS final candidates this year is 1,37,244 more than that of 2022.

According an official of the AHSEC, 2,72,529 candidates will take the HS final examinations in the Arts stream this year against 1,56,107 last year; 47,485 candidates in the Science stream against 33,534 last year; 20,907 candidates in the Commerce stream against 15,199 candidates last year; and 1,948 candidates in the Vocational stream against 785 last year.

According to the AHSEC official, the Council will conduct the examinations from February 20 to March 20 this year in 856 centres. The practical examinations started on January 25 and will conclude on February 15.

The AHSEC prohibited all electronic gadgets like mobile phones, electronic watches, calculators etc., in examination halls. The examination centres will be under Section 144 of CrPC during the examination hours. The candidates will get an additional ten-minute time for reading question papers during the examinations.
