GUWAHATI: The prices of petrol and diesel have gone up in the state in sync with the hike in VAT (Value Added Tax) with effect from today. With this, people’s spending is set to surge.

The Finance (Taxation) Department of the State Government issued a notification last night in connection with the VAT hike. In sync with the hike in VAT, prices of normal petrol and Xtra Premium petrol have gone up at a rate of Rs 0.50 per litre and diesel by Rs 0.51 per litre. With the increase, the price of normal petrol today is Rs 97.52 per litre compared to Rs 97.02 per litre yesterday, and that of Xtra Premium petrol is Rs 104.16 per litre compared to Rs 103.68 per litre yesterday in Guwahati.

The price of diesel in Guwahati today is Rs 89.58 per litre, compared to Rs 89.07 per litre yesterday.

This hike will have its effects on the prices of other commodities in the state as well.

This hike came on the heels of the APDCL (Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd.) hiking the power tariff recently from Rs 0.30 to Rs 0.70 per unit based on the categories of power consumers.

A section of consumers filling up with petrol at an Indian Petrol Depot near Survey (near Dispur Last Gate) in Guwahati expressed their disappointment before this reporter today. A person, Pradip Kalita, said, "The hike in prices of all essential commodities, LPG, power tariffs, etc., have burdened all sections of people to a large extent. To cap it all, the government has hiked the prices of diesel and petrol."
