NEW DELHI: Minister of State for Railways and sitting BJP MP from Nowgong, Rajen Gohain on Saturday withdrew his candidature from contesting the forthcoming Lok Sabha election. Gohain was accused of raping a woman in Nowgong last year.

“I am falsely fabricated in a case because of which I will not contest in the election. In fact, I will not contest until and unless I get a clean chit,” said Gohain

He said that the Election Commission has also become strict, “I have taken the decision so that neither my party nor any leader from my party face any embarrassment,” said Gohain.

Gohain added that he will support the candidate who contests from the Nowgong Lok Sabha seat. “My service to the party will continue. I will also support the candidate whoever contests from Nowgong,” said Gohain.

News were doing the round that Gohain was asked by the Central leadership of BJP not to contest the LS election this time. “As his name was involved in a crime against a woman, the party had earlier suggested him not to contest the election this time,” said a senior party member.

On the other hand, many claims that Rajen Gohain’s wife Rita Gohain might contest from the Nowgong Lok Sabha seat.
