STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP)-2020 seems to be a challenging task for Assam as the colleges and universities of the state have 1,092 vacant posts of teachers.

Ten universities of the state have 349 vacant posts – 132 in Gauhati University, 25 in Dibrugarh University and 26 in Bodoland University. Other universities having a sizeable number of vacant posts of teachers are KK Handique State Open University, Cotton University, Majuli University of Culture, Kumar Vaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, Rabindranath Tagore University, Madhandev University, Bhattadev University, etc. The situation in the colleges is not better either. As many as 743 posts of associate professors are vacant in various colleges in the state.

The state Education Department has not yet completed the process of teacher appointments in universities and colleges. The situation of faculty members of the universities and colleges has direct fallout on the life of students of the state and the Northeast. Students from the state and the region continue to go to other states for better higher education.

Students from the Northeast going to other states for better education is a pointer to the fact that the colleges and universities in the state do not provide them with a better education. It is an area that academicians and the government need to rack their brains.
