Guwahati: Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Dr. Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, opined that knowledge is power and that India’s independent technology has changed many things. He also spoke about the pervasive existence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how we can learn from it.

Dr. Somanath said this in a felicitation programme held by Pragjyotishpur University at the Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium here on Wednesday to celebrate the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission and to facilitate an interaction between him and students.

Since the day of the programme coincided with Shilpi Divas, a lamp-lighting ceremony followed by the garlanding of the image of the great artist Jyoti Prasad Agarwala formally opened the felicitation-cum-interaction programme.

“Since the beginning of civilization, the land of Assam has made immense contribution. Due to the balance maintained with nature, Assam has contributed to the development of civilization, culture, and technology,” said Dr. Somanath, while interacting with the students.

Students from across schools and colleges in Assam witnessed the visionary scientist speak on India’s bold foray into space exploration and the challenges thereof. Responding to students’ queries following his address, Dr. Somanath noted that the future is bright for Indian space ventures.

He stressed India’s plan to send humans to the moon between 2035 and 2040. For this bold initiative, ISRO is preparing its own spacesuits, as the earlier ones were Russia-made. ISRO has not only made plans to send humans to the Moon but also to Mars.

Dr. Somanath said the target is to expand the space economy from $9 billion to $40 billion in order to create more investment opportunities, jobs, and technological possibilities to make India more secure on the space front.

The ISRO chief also mentioned that the INSAT- 3DS will be launched by February 2024 and is expected to be used for research purposes by both private and government agencies.

Notably, ISRO chairman and internationally renowned scientist, Dr. Somanath, led the team of scientists and engineers behind the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission of 2023, which helped India make history by becoming the first country to reach near the moon’s South Pole. Another feather in his cap is the successful launch of India’s first observation mission to the Sun, Aditya-L1, in September 2023.
