GUWAHATI: An inter-state car theft racket which was busted has exposed the new modus operandi of car lifters.
Many vehicle owners who give their cars on rent faced losses during the Covid pandemic. They were finding it difficult to pay the EMIs of their car loans. Taking advantage of their helpless situation, car lifters have started taking vehicles on rent. They pay the rent regularly for 2-3 months to gain the trust of the vehicle owners and after that they disappear with the vehicles.
Prabhakar Sinha of Basistha lodged an FIR at the Basistha PS on July 16 stating that he had given his Tata Yodha vehicle to one Bikash Talukdar on rent. Initially he was getting his agreed rent. Furthermore, he also gave two more vehicles (owned by his friends) to Bikash Talukdar of Six Mile on rental basis. But after a few days, Prabhakar was neither getting any rent nor getting the vehicles back.
After investigation, the locations of the vehicles were found in Manipur. Accordingly, a police team was sent to Manipur and all the three vehicles were recovered from Churachandpur, Chassad and Ukhrul with the help of Manipur Police and brought back. During inquiry it was found that Bikash Talukdar is part of the gang of Debajit Bhattacharya (already arrested by Geetanagar Police). Bikash Talukdar has been arrested.
