GUWAHATI: Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi has underlined that the forthcoming Assembly election in the State will be a straight fight between regionalism and nationalism.

Alleging that the State government is trying to create confusion among the people of the State, Gogoi on Wednesday elaborated, "The Government is giving land pattas to people occupying lands. This is an age-old practice that needs no publicity by holding programmes for the distribution of land pattas. Still there are around 4,75,000 landless people in the State. The residents of Laika and Dodhia are protesting for more than 25 days demanding land rights. Scores of people are living on the streets in various areas across the State."

The AJP president further asserted that the State government has betrayed the people by not implementing the 'Hari Shankar Brahma Committee' report.

"On January 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sivasagar. The Government has been promoting that 1 lakh people will be given land pattas at the programme. The date will be remembered as 'Betrayal Day' in the history of Assam," he said.

LurinjyotiGogoi has also pointed out that the people who occupy lands for years should be given land pattas.

"If the Prime Minister does not let the people of the State know the total bighas of land (area) against which pattas have been issued in the recent past, the move will be considered as a tactics of the BJP to woo voters," stressed Gogoi.

AJP general secretary JagadishBhuyan alleged that the PM is fooling the people. "It is not his duty to give land pattas to people. It's the job of mandals and circle officers," asserted Bhuyan.

The AJP president further said that on Thursday it would carry out demonstrations in all district headquarters against the Government over a slew of demands.

Announcing that already 4,600 of the proposed 27,292 booth committees have been set up, the party asserted that the remaining booth committees will be formed by January 30. The party has also formed an 'Election Planning and Direction Committee' in view of the forthcoming Assembly election in the State.
