GUWAHATI: The State Government launched a massive JE (Japanese Encephalitis) vaccination drive today. It is the first such vaccine covering the 15-65-year age group against 1-15 years earlier. The target of the drive is 40 lakh people.

Launching the vaccination drive at Sonapur in Kamrup (M) today, Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said, "This vaccination drive will cover 40.17 lakh people in 99 development blocks in the state. Last year, the Central Government allowed JE vaccines for people from 15-65 years of age. We conceived our plan last year and started its implementation today."

The Health Minister appealed to the people of JE-prone areas identified by the department to take the vaccine. "Since we have successfully inoculated over 2.65 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine in the state, we hope to meet the JE vaccination target," he said.

Meanwhile, the minister flagged off forty mobile vans – Covid Vaccination Express – for vaccination in remote areas. Care India, an NGO, donated the vans.

Director of Health Services (Family Welfare) Munindra Nath Ngatey said. "Those who took Covid vaccines can take JE vaccines after a gap of 28 days. Likewise, a person taking JE vaccine can take Covid vaccine after 28 days." The Covid Express vans are for the remote areas in Barpeta, Goalpara, Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, South Salmara and Udalguri districts.
