GUWAHATI: Following a directive from Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, the Transport department has placed Kamrup Metro DTO (District Transport Officer) and three others under suspension with immediate effect for irregularities in motor vehicle tax.

Irregularities in deposition of motor vehicle tax coming to the department's notice, an inquiry was conducted. The inquiry has revealed that tax evasion was allowed by the DTO, Kamrup Metro. "A vehicle owner could pay the current year tax by skipping the arrears. This goes against the rules," a press release said.

The four suspended officials are DTO Arun Bora, head assistant Simanta Neog, junior assistant Arup Kumar Barman and cashier Sidhheshwar Ranghang.

Earlier the Transport Department had directed the Commissioner of Transport to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter. The Department will recover the taxes wherever evaded, as all the data is available in the NIC database. Further, the Transport Department had a detailed meeting on Monday with NIC authorities as they maintain the Vahan portal, and directed them to plug technical loopholes to prevent any such irregularities in future, the release added.
