BOKAJAN: Karbi Anglong Police recovered a huge consignment of narcotic drugs from a truck plying along the Assam-Nagaland border in East Karbi Anglong on Monday morning.

Acting on a specific input, Dillai Police set up mobile checking over NH-36 and recovered the contraband drugs weighing over 5 kg from a truck (AS 01KC 4951). The approximate value of the seized narcotics in the international black market is reported to be over Rs 30 crore. As per the preliminary investigation, the truck was coming from Manipur and was proceeding towards Guwahati.

Police have also arrested truck driver Ismail Ali (30), who is a resident of Pachania Pahar of Jogighopa in Bongaigaon district. They have also seized Rs 50,000 from his possession.

Of late, National Highway (NH)-36 — which connects Assam, Nagaland and Manipur has emerged as a drug-trafficking route. Narcotics of various types from the infamous 'Golden Triangle' make their entry into Assam and other parts of the country through this route.

This has been evident following the several seizures of such illegal drug consignments by the Karbi Anglong police. In the past couple of months, Karbi Anglong police have seized over 8 kilogram of heroin and thousands of WIY tablets worth over Rs 100 crore in the black market.

A police officer said, "Smugglers, including those involved in narcotics, have been using NH-36 following the sudden nationwide lockdown which resulted in a disruption of the smuggling and delivery network of some drug lords based in Manipur. Earlier, they had used the Dimapur Railway Station as an easy and convenient means for trafficking drugs.

A Police officer said, "These drugs are brought into India from various laboratories manufacturing ATS (Amphetamine Type Stimulant) located strategically on the Myanmar side but close to the Indian border. These items are taken to Moreh via Churachandpur district of Manipur. These drugs then reach Imphal from where these items are smuggled in smaller quantities into different parts of the country via Nagaland and Assam."
