GUWAHATI: Literate Muslims and various organizations have slammed the AIUDF chief and MP Badruddin Ajmal for his alleged irresponsible comment on the new two-child policy of Assam Government.

The State Cabinet recently took a decision whereby government jobs were kept out of bounds for people with more than two children from January 1, 2021. The decision is part of the government’s population policy that aims to control abnormal and alarming birthrate in the State.

Reacting to the government’s decision, Ajmal, said, “Muslims will continue to have children and not listen to anyone. The government is bringing in a law to stop Muslims from getting jobs. However, the Sachar Committee report suggests less than 2 per cent Muslims get government jobs.”

Renowned surgeon Dr Illias Ali, said Ajmal’s statement is very unfortunate and irresponsible. Dr Ali stated giving birth to many children has proved to be a bane for Muslim families and there has been a growing awareness about the concept of small family among the community.

“Ajmal’s statement is contradictory. Being a Parliamentarian he should have been responsible before making comments on such a serious issue,” Dr Ali who has been awarded with Padma Shri this year, said.

Tasneem Ahmed, a college teacher, termed Ajmal’s statement as revelation of his poor knowledge and medieval mindset. “There are different reasons for Muslims not getting enough government jobs. Giving birth to more children has no co-relation with government jobs,” Ahmed said.

State BJP leader Syed Mominul Awal accused Ajmal of making a controversial statement on the two-child policy to fulfill his narrow political interest. He said the Holy Quran has not mentioned anything about giving more birth to children.

“Ajmal has been using the Muslims originated from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) as vote banks for his politics. He is now trying to enhance the vote bank by asking the Muslims to produce more children,” Awal said.
