GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has asked the governments and four other parties to submit their respective affidavits on the issue of locking the biometric details of over 17 lakh people within three weeks. Lakhs of people in the state are not getting their Aadhaar cards due to the locking of biometrics.

A PIL (27/2022) from the Citizens for Justice and Peace filed in the Gauhati High Court said, "Despite fulfilling all other requisites for Aadhaar cards, lakhs of people cannot apply for Aadhaar cards only because their biometric details are locked. The PIL made the Government of India, Government of Assam, Registrar General of India, Ministry of Home Affairs and the NRC Authority parties in the petition."

Based on the PIL, the bench of Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Soumitra Saikia asked all the parties to respond to the PIL through their respective affidavits. The PIL will come up for the next hearing on May 2, 2022.

The PIL said, "Aadhaar cards have nothing to do with citizenship. There is no reason to block the biometric details of people who gave them (biometric details) to an authority claiming their inclusion in the NRC." The State government is also serious about this issue. After holding talks with the AASU, other organizations and stakeholders, Dispur has decided to move the Supreme Court of India on it. The State Government will pray before the Supreme Court to direct the Ministry of Home Affairs to unlock the biometric details of people who applied for inclusion in the NRC.
