GUWAHATI: Incidence of malaria, Japanese encephalitis and acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) are on the wane in Assam, but at the same time the State is witnessing an increase in incidence of dengue fever. This was revealed in data released by the Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) recently.

According to the data, there were 473 cases on malaria in Assam in 2020, with two fatalities. However, this number came down to 162 in 2021, with no deaths. In case of dengue, 32 cases were reported in the State in 2020 with no fatalities, but this number shot up to 103 in 2021.

The NVDCP reported that there were 588 cases of AES in Assam in 2020, with 96 deaths. This number decreased to 488 in 2021 with 91 deaths. In case of Japanese encephalitis, there were 320 cases in the State in 2020, with 51 fatalities. This number came down to 218, with 40 deaths.
