GUWAHATI: The state Department of School Education will make daily attendance tracking of teachers and students through the Shiksha Setu portal compulsory from October 1 onward.

The Department of School Education has decided to crack the whip on the matter of daily attendance tracking for all school teachers and students. Towards that end, the department announced this measure through a letter addressed to deputy commissioners of all districts and principal secretaries of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), and the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC).

The letter has instructed all DCs and principal secretaries of BTC, KAAC, and DHAC to ensure that the registration of all teachers and students of schools in their respective areas is completed on the Shiksha Setu portal.

It is necessary to mention here that the Education Minister of Assam, Ranoj Pegu, officially launched the Shiksha Setu Axom Portal in Guwahati on April 24, 2023. The Shiksha Setu portal of the department of school education under the Assam government is a comprehensive digital platform with 360-degree information on schools, staff, and students. It is designed to serve as a single source of information for day-to-day administrative operations. The portal is also considered an enabler for the department to take timely and data-driven decisions for optimization of resources and improve the overall performance of schools.

For better usage of the Shiksha Setu Axom portal, the State Government provided computer tablets to all schools in the state. However, a number of tablets were returned by the schools, citing defects. In a recent move, the department of school education informed teachers that they could use their personal mobile phones to access the portal and upload their information. A considerable number of teachers have yet to upload the necessary information, as evident in the latest communication by the department.

The recent letter goes on to mention that 2,10,512 out of the total of 2,36,277 teachers have completed the one-time registration, while 42,79,039 students, out of a total of 49,36,509, have been registered in the Shiksha Setu portal till September 21, 2023. Therefore, it can be easily concluded that the system of daily attendance tracking through the portal has proven to be ineffective so far due to the non-registration of all teachers and students.

Moreover, the letter also instructs all junior colleges in the state to complete the registration of teachers and students.
