GUWAHATI: Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Tuesday asserted that the Assam Police had achieved significant successes in thwarting the menaces of drugs and illegal arms in the State. He further said, "Each citizen can further help the police department in freeing the society from crimes; and that too even without wearing our uniform," he added.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday evening, Mahanta said that the police registered 601 cases and arrested 1,000 persons between June 26 and August 31 in connection with the sale, transportation and alluring the younger generation towards illegal drugs and narcotics substances. He further said that in the last two months, the police seized 10 kg of heroin; a huge quantity of ganja; 8,000 kg of opium; and 50,000 cough syrup bottles used by drug addicts.
Mahanta said, "Such a development is evident of the Assam Police's alertness and prompt actions to eradicate the menace of drugs, which has ruined the lives of many youths across the State. The police have also prepared a database of 80 repeated offenders so that it could go the roots and make the State free from drugs.
"Assam Police officials from the rank of SI and seniors are undergoing special trainings to deal with drugs and related crimes. We have chalked out a few model FIRs to file against drugs offenders so that they don't get any scope to take advantage of any legal lacunae."
The DGP also said that the Assam Police has been able to recover illegal arms and ammunitions in the districts that fall under the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD), at frequent intervals.
Meanwhile, sources informed that after the Bodo Peace Accord was signed in January 27 this year, the Assam Police has recovered 42 AK Rifles, 3 HK Rifles, 2 SLR, 4 INSAS rifles, 2 LMG/MMG, 25 pistol/revolvers, 3506 ammunitions, 108 hand grenades, one rocket launcher, six Shells, 1 wireless set, 202 detonators and 20 kg explosive. The police have recovered such arms and ammunitions from Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang and Udalguri districts under the BTAD administration.
Mahanta also said that the Assam Police recently filed charge sheets against the accused in a number of crime cases including lynching. He appealed to the people to extend their support and cooperation to the Assam Police to create a crime-free society.
The DGP also exhorted the people to follow all COVID-19 safety protocols in public places so that the State can win its battle against coronavirus.
