Guwahati: A section of police officers, civil officers and others misuses PSOs (personal security officers), besides using them as a status symbol. Some officers misuse their orderlies as well.

The officers and others get PSOs for their security. However, a section of them makes their PSOs carry vegetable bags in one hand and guns in the other during marketing. Even the wives of some officers and others also misuse security personnel when they go shopping.

"How can a PSO carrying a vegetable bag save an officer in any untoward incident in the market?" conscious circles feel.

Orderlies look like servants of their officers rather than that of the public. They do every household work of their officers. According to sources, this practice is glaringly visible among a section of Assam Police battalion officers.

According to allegations, orderlies even work as caretakers of their officers' cowsheds. There are also allegations that some officers keep more orderlies than allotted.

An official said, "We cannot put an end to this practice by force if the officers don't feel it. It depends on their mindset. The move to withdraw PSOs from officers and others is based on threat perception. The government withdrew 726 PSOs of officers, retired officers, politicians and others. The government will withdraw more PSOs after the recommendations of the state-level security review meeting."
