Mob attacks AASU members; one die, 2 injured in Jorhat

JORHAT: A mob killed Animesh Bhuyan — a member of the 'Brahmaputra Anchalik' unit of the AASU (All Assam Students' Union) and critically injured two others — including another AASU member near the Nirmal Chariali here on Monday afternoon. Bhuyan was brutally beaten to death.

They were attacked by the mob when they were trying to assist some people who had met with an accident. The mob mistook them as the persons who caused the road mishap, and attacked them, resulting in Bhuyan's death.

The two injured youths are Mridusmanta Baruah, cultural secretary of the 'Brahmaputra Anchalik' unit of AASU and Pranoy Dutta.

Police have arrested four persons in this connection, and are on the lookout for another accused identified as Kola A case has been registered in this regard. The DC has ordered a magisterial inquiry and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed Education Minister Ranoj Pegu to proceed to Jorhat and take stock of the ground situation there.

Bijay Shankar Bordoloi, the general secretary of the Jorhat unit of AASU said that he received a call from Mridusmanta Baruah in the afternoon. At that time, the unit members were demonstrating in front of the Jorhat Court premises. Bordoloi further said that he along with other AASU members immediately rushed to the spot.

Meanwhile, police took the three persons to the Jorhat Medical College & Hospital where the hospital authorities declared that Animesh was brought dead.

Bordoloi has condemned the mob attack.
