GUWAHATI: State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said that the monitoring of the attendance of teachers and students in the schools of the state is not a punitive but a corrective measure from the government.

The minister exchanged opinions with the media in Guwahati today on the issue of the Shiksha Setu Portal, which keeps a watch on the attendance of teachers and students in schools.

When asked as to what action the government would take against the teachers who refuse to upload their and their students' attendance in the Shiksha Setu Portal, the Minister said, "Our approach is not punitive. We, however, want to take corrective measures. The teachers and students were not punctual when there was no monitoring system. Since we have a proper monitoring system now, let the teachers render their services punctually and impart education to the students."

The minister, however, dropped a broad hint that, in cases of extreme violations of rules by any teacher, the government would take the legal course. "We will make the uploading of teachers and students' attendance to the portal mandatory from October 1, 2023. I hope all concerned will cooperate," the minister said.

On the absence of students from schools for a longer period, the Minister said, "In such cases, we need to investigate the reasons behind absence and take measures accordingly. In the recent past, some students disappeared from schools in Guwahati all of a sudden. When we investigated the matter, we came to know that the students went to their native villages along with their guardians for agricultural work. In such cases, we need to make arrangements for imparting education to such students in their native villages."

According to the minister, the Shiksha Setu Portal has 44,735 schools registered with it. The number of teaching and non-teaching staff registered with the portal is 2,13,685, compared to their total strength of 2,35,387. And of the 47,96,980 students in the state, 46,07,558 registered on the portal.
