GUWAHATI: The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) has informed that the Kopili power station (4X50MW), the Khandong power station (2X25MW) and the Kopili Stage-II power station (1X25MW) are currently in shutdown condition for restoration work.

Since the power stations are shut down, no storage of water will be made in the reservoir until the restoration works are completed. So, the natural catchment water will spill from the reservoir after it reaches the spillway levels of the respective dams.

Under such circumstances, the NEEPCO has already written to the Deputy Commissioners of seven districts to intimate the localities and habitants residing near the Kopili river downstream to be careful while using the river water and keep away their livestock till October this year. The NEEPCO has sent its intimation letters to the DCs of Kamrup (Metropolitan), Haflong, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, West Karbi Anglong in Assam and East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya. The SPs and those associated with disaster management including NDRF have also been intimated.

“Restoration work of the Khandong power station and the Kopili Stage-II power station has been delayed due to the ongoing lockdown. It will take a month for completion if the lockdown is lifted on May 3,” a source said.

On other hand, repairing of the pipeline carrying water to a hydro-power plant of NEEPCCO which burst in the Dima Hasao district in 2019, will take two years. A large portion of the Kopili Hydro Electric Plant of the State-run NEEPCO was also inundated due to the rupture in the pipeline that carries 12,000 litres of water per second.

It may be mentioned that NEEPCO supplies 150 MW of electricity to Assam.
