GUWAHATI: It's now official. The new regional political party under the aegis of AASU (All Assam Students' Union) and the AJYCP (Asom Jatiyabadi Yuva Chattra Parishad) will be launched within a week's time. This was announced by AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath here on Tuesday.

However, asserting that the apolitical identity of AASU will always remain intact, Nath added, "Regionalism is our political ideology. We will promote this ideology in the interest of the Assamese people."

Referring to the new party, Nath said, "The proposed regional political alternative in the State will be against the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), the AGP (Asom Gana Parishad), the Congress and also the AIUDF (All India United Democratic Front).

"The 16-member advisory panel, formed by the AASU and the AJYCP, in its report recommended such an alternative political force in the State. We'll also pursue the other suggestions of this committee."

Mentionably, the advisory panel's report is yet to be made public.

Reacting to a query on talks with other like-minded organizations, Nath said, "The political party will definitely have talks with all such forces in the State."

The seeds of a new regional political force were sown during the recent movement against CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) across Assam.

This proposed move is the second such attempt by the AASU to constitute regional political parties. After the historic six-year-long masses' agitation against foreign nationals concluded with the signing of the Assam Accord, the AGP was constituted under AASU's patronage at Golaghat in 1985.
