GUWAHATI: If the Government of India's plan becomes a reality, Assam and Bangladesh will get a new road link via a four-lane bridge across the Kushiyara river.

The move is part of the India-Bangladesh friendship. India has planned road connectivity with Bangladesh by constructing a 300-metre four-lane bridge over the Kushiyara River and an around 600-metre road in the Karimganj sector of the Indo-Bangla border connecting Karimganj in Assam and Jakiganj Upozila in the Sylhet district in Bangladesh. Nearly half of the 900-metre road project will be in Assam (Karinganj) and the other half in Bangladesh.

On behalf of the Government of India, NHIDCL (National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd) Headquarters, New Delhi, has already initiated the process by floating tenders inviting consultancy services for detailed project report (DPR) preparation of the road project. The road project, if implemented, will benefit Assam and other northeastern states besides Bangladesh. The DPR will spell out the specifications of the project and its estimated cost.

NHIDCL will send the DPR to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval.

NHIDCL is a fully-owned company under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India.
