GUWAHATI: In one more step to tackle the rising traffic congestion in the gateway to the Northeast, the Lok Nirman Bibhag (earlier known as PWD or Public Works Department) has decided to construct another flyover at Sarabhati here. The foundation stone of the project is slated to commence before the Assembly election-related 'Model Code of Conduct' comes into force.

This two-lane flyover of approximately 800 meters will stretch from a few meters before the Sarabhati Chariali up to a few meters beyond the B Barooah Cancer Institute. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 148 crore.

Presently, the department has started the evaluation process of the submitted tenders. Department sources further informed that the flyover will be completed within three years from the date of work order issued to contractor. The proposed flyover will meet a long-pending demand of the people to tackle the heavy traffic jams witnessed at this stretch in the city, added the sources.

As on date, construction of the two-lane flyover is in full swing at the Super Market-Dispur area. Besides, construction of the proposed four-lane flyover from Maligaon to Kamakhya Gate is slated to start shortly.
